Sensory Environment

Food Familiarity

For some autistic people, certain (or new) textures and tastes are very discomforting or even unbearable, which elevates stress.

Smells

Strong smells can contribute towards an overwhelming atmosphere.

Music

Loud music can also be overwhelming and make it harder to listen and engage with others.

Sudden Unexpected Sounds

Sudden sounds often occur in theme parks (e.g., people screaming on a passing rollercoaster), musicals (e.g., loud bangs) or parties (e.g., balloons popping). However, these are just some examples.

Relationships to People and Crowds

People's Level of Understanding

Close or Understanding people generally are easier to be around and require less masking, so it is less draining to spend time with them. They can also provide insight when needed to other people, for example if a break in a quiet place is needed.

If you do not know the exact number of people, that's okay! Just estimate to the best of your knowledge.

Quiet Space

Particularly in crowded venues or areas, having a separate space is a metaphorical lifesaver! It helps to reduce anxiety and be more relaxed and present when with others.

Possible Unexpected Change

Food Changes

How likely is it that the food planned to eat will change? For example, having a Chinese takeaway instead of a Pizza? If no food is involved, select Very Unlikely.

Unexpected Delays

How likely is it that you could be significantly late to the social event or an activity that is part of it?

Travel Changes

How likely that your method of transport or commute will change unexpectedly? For example, from a bus to a train journey? Different methods of transport are stressful to different levels for each individual. Some may prefer trains, whereas some find buses more manageable.

Optional Participation

Is participation optional (with no implied pressure) to join in with an unplanned activity? For example, if people decide to swim at the beach because of the hot weather, is there no social pressure to enter the water?
